New Tablet PCs Draw Crowds at ITxpo
Thursday, 7 November 2002
New tablet PCs running Microsoft’s Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system were on show at Gartner ITxpo in Cannes, France this week, ahead of the formal launches by four manufacturers across Europe due on 7 November.
Microsoft showed the Acer convertible unit in which the screen is permanently attached to the system unit and full QWERTY keyboard. Hewlett-Packard showed its Compaq Tablet PC TC 1000 which features separate components that can be combined for a multi-role system. Toshiba and Fujitsu Siemens will also launch Tablet PCs in Europe on 7 November.
The Compaq device has four elements: a tablet PC, a keyboard with swiveling screen holder to turn the tablet into a notebook, a docking station to create a desktop machine and a cradle to take interchangeable storage - CD-ROM, DVD-RW, and 3.5 inch floppy drive). The tablet element has a 10.4-inch TFT XGA screen. The Toshiba unit has a 12-inch screen.
Microsoft’s Windows XP Tablet software includes handwriting recognition, digital ink and basic graphics to support, for instance, regularization of roughly drawn geometric figures. A soft QWERTY keyboard can be displayed as another input option.
Compaq’s tablet weighs 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) and the keyboard unit adds another 300 grams (10.5 ounces). The Transmeta processor gives a claimed five hours of battery life.
A range of wireless options are built into the Compaq: a network interface card, modem, and wireless LAN to 802.11b. A GPRS card inserted into the PC card slot allows the device to become a mobile phone as it has a built-in microphone slot and speakers.
Microsoft featured twelve Acer machines for people to try on its Future Zone stand, regularly drew the crowds to repeated demonstrations.
